Vote Or Else!
The Indiana Primary is tomorrow. It has several flaws sadly.
One, it is open from 6am to 6pm only. If you're getting back from working late and have to pick up dinner for the family would it hurt anyone to have the polls open later to 8pm or so? Just curious.
Two, it also is not an open primary. You have declare a party and vote only for that party. Suppose you're a Democrat who wants to select a presidental candidate, but you really can't stand Gov. Kernan and want to select his Republican challenger? Nope you can't do that under our stupid system. Pick the race that is most important to you and just deal with the other candidates for the other positions.
Three, our primary is rather useless from a national point of view (POV). If you're Republican, no one is running against Pres. Bush. If you're a Democrat your vote is useless because Sen. Kerry had the delegate votes wrapped up in March. For Senate or House of Representatives there are no real challengers to the incumbants so you're voting for who they will face in November.
Four, due to the lack of challengers most posts don't have any opposition until you get to dog catcher or some other low post. I know County Clerk and County Commisioner are important to the people running for those positions, but to the average voter, eh!
And they wonder why voter turnout is so low? I think the forecast is for 15% of eligible voters to come out tomorrow. Ick!
Your vote does matter though. You are actually electing school board members. Go out an vote anyway. If anything it'll get you into the habit and you'll know where your polling place is. Besides, my number one rule is: If you didn't vote you're not allowed to bitch!
