The Big Bang

Didn't really have time to comment on Saturday, but May 1st was the European Union's enlargement. 10, mostly former Communist countries, added to the E.U. on Saturday. Last year when an E.U. undersecretary spoke to us in Luxomberg she described this day as "the big bang."

As an economic and trade bloc I think the EU has been a big success since the end of WWII. Yet some countries want it to be more powerful and try to be a political and military bloc as well. I just don't see that happening. Look what happened last year. The countries that used to be under the yoke of communist USSR said, "Go America into Iraq" while the French Prime Minister said (and this is an actual quote to the best of my memory) "This was a perfect time for you to sit down and shut up!" With then current members United Kingdom and Spain also supporting our War on Terror I simply don't see 25 countries coming together on various foriegn policy issues to mount a common foreign and defense policy. The E.U. as a super-state: doubt it!
